Lobster Claw Meat In Every Roll, Plans To Open More Locations Island wide

James Chan

Chunky Lobsters

Look out for this new building called Oxley Tower along Robinson Road. Skidaddle over to the 2nd floor and you’ll find Chunky Lobsters. Chunky Lobsters is a small eatery but they’re HUGE in popularity with the office people over at the CBD. Expect an average waiting time of 15 to 20 minutes.

The Food

As their name suggests, Chunky Lobsters specializes in lobster rolls. The beauty of their menu is in its simplicity. You only have three different main product offerings to choose from. Also, all of their lobsters are imported all the way from Canada and flown in once a month. These lobsters are then stored in a cold room at -18 Degrees Celsius and delivered to their store 1 to 3 times a week to ensure customers have the freshest lobster experience.

Top up $0.90 cents for a drink with any purchase of their lobster rolls or add $3.90 for a drink and a bowl of lobster bisque!

Oh, and each serving comes with 3 generous rolls of sweet, juicy lobster claws. Need I say more?

Chunky’s Original, $16

For a true lobster experience at Chunky Lobsters, the Chunky’s Original is something not to be missed. The sweet lobster meat is met with a touch of mayo, lemon and something a little extra. I couldn’t really place my finger on it, but when I tried to get them to reveal the ingredients I was met with red tape.

Chunky’s Connecticut, $16

Alternatively, for the same price, you can opt for something more buttery to go with the sweetness of the lobster rolls. Slightly salty and sweet, each roll is pure joy and before you know it, it’s all gone!

Chunky’s Cheezy, $16

This is my favourite and for good reason. I mean, who doesn’t like cheese? (Unless you’re lactose intolerant, then I offer my sincere condolences) They use 4 different types of cheeses that results in a nice stretchy cheese that taste great and makes for a good insta story too!

Lobster Bisque, $3.90

It’s going to come in a small little cup so don’t look disappointed when you receive it (I might have looked a little sad). Taste wise, you have your distinct and wonderfully sweet crustacean flavors swimming around in the little bowl but it felt a tad lighter than the usual explosion of flavors I’m used to when it comes a crab or lobster bisque. Still, $3.90. I’ll drink one of those everyday if I could.

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

You’ll probably need to have your cholesterol levels checked if you eat this everyday but it’s a definite YES from me. There’s probably nowhere else in Singapore where you can find lobster rolls at such low prices.

If Robinson Road is too far for that Lobster craving, catch them at Singapore Garden Festival 2018 from 21st July to 3rd August 2018 @ Gardens By The Bay. They’re going to be one of the food vendors there and YOU CAN EXPECT A QUEUE for sure!

Uni Gallery @ The Plaza

If you’ve ever been to Japan, you probably wouldn’t argue with me when I say ANYWHERE you dine in Japan will ensure a pleasant and satisfying experience. The service is great, the dishes taste amazing and the amount of meticulous care the Japanese people put into their craft is out of this world. My favorite place for food was none other than the bustling restaurants of Tsukiji Fish Market . After my experience with Uni Gallery earlier last night, it’s safe to say that I don’t have to travel so far for that taste anymore.

The Food

Don’t be alarmed when you flip open the menu. The prices are not going to be your usual Cafe & Bistro type of fare. We are dealing with Uni here. They are hard to harvest and each uni yields extremely small portions of the delectable meat. Also, it is highly recommended that to appreciate the full flavor of the uni, it must be eaten within 24 hours of harvest.

Uni Gallery serves non uni related dishes as well but nahhhhh. I went there for the sole purpose of their uni recommendations!

uni gallery shutou

Uni Shutou Original, $32

Using soy sauce to marinate the uni brings out the strong umami flavours and provides a harmonious blend of different tastes. Love the whole make your own uni roll concept!

uni gallery oyster shot

Uni Oyster Shot, $25

If you ask me, this is definitely the winner of the night. When you scoop all the ingredients into your mouth and take a bite, the taste of the sea literally hits you like a wave. The plethora of flavours exploding from the oyster and ikura roe itself targets every inch of your million taste buds. Throw in the sweet and creamy notes of the fresh uni and wow. That’s what a #foodgasm feels like.

uni gallery chirashi don

Uni Chirashi Don, $49

Jason, the owner of Uni Gallery assured me that for the price, I would be getting the best value as they’re very generous with the uni. True to his word, there were numerous streaks of the delectable uni flesh layered on top of fragrant Japanese rice. Could have been a little more generous with the rice though but other than that, no complaints!

Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?

Some would stare aghast at the exorbitant prices. Some would not. Let’s talk about overall value in correlation to price then. You’re receiving premium grade uni and you won’t have to splurge on an air ticket to Japan to do so. What’s more, Uni Gallery is very generous with their portions of uni! I’ll definitely be back for sure!

Bochinche fine dining

Bochinche

My lunch experience at Bochinche is one that is truly worthy of this week’s Weekly Glutton. I wouldn’t mind a 2nd round tomorrow even!

With a $32++ lunch price tag, Bochinche is the perfect location for business lunches to impress your clients. Their lunch crowd consisted of purely office executives anyways.

Bochinche cosy, home-like decor

Real home-like decor

From the get go, you’re hit with a really warm and cosy feeling as soon as you take a step inside. Art prints adorned on the walls, an open kitchen concept where you get to watch the chefs at work and just one or two empty tables left for walk ins. (Whew lucky me)

For the set lunch, you can either choose the 2 course meal ($27++) or the 3 course meal ($32++). I ordered the 3 course meal as I was feeling pretty famished. From what I know, the rib eye steak is a constant in the menu. The rest of the items vary from time to time.

The Food

Bochinche healthy Beef Carpaccio

Beef Carpaccio, papaya, olives, capers and parmesan

Carpaccio’s are meant to be raw but the Chefs at Bochinche obviously know what they’re doing by searing the edges of the beef ever so lightly. The olives and cheese gives off a very bold aftertaste but it works well with the mellow notes of the papaya. Even with the full flavoured beef, everything blends well together. A true rebel of a dish indeed.

Bochinche lightly seasoned ribeye steak

180g Rib Eye steak, chips (wedges) & chimichurri mayo

My first impression – What? 180g only? I’ll never be full! Which turned out to be true. But let’s talk flavors first. I ordered medium rare but you can have it any way you like (except well done).

Bochinche seabass

My friend ordered the seabass. My advice? Argentinian cooking revolves around savoury, meaty dishes and the fish didn’t seem like a popular choice among diners. There must be a reason why the steak is a constant in the menu yeah?

Bochinche chocolate pudding dessert with berries

Chocolate pudding, salted caramel and berries

Dessert was the reason why I managed to feel full at the end of the meal. They give you just enough pudding so you don’t feel so lethargic or walk away from the table feeling you still need something else.

Recommended to Order: The Prix Fixe Menu 3 Course (Beef Options)

Do remember to book a table in advance or prepare to be using your phone mindlessly while waiting for a table to be vacant.
