The Market Grill – An American Diner That Serves Amazing Wagyu Steaks And Super Fresh Lobster

James Chan

The Market Grill

The Market Grill might be familiar to many along Telok Ayer Street as they’ve been around for many years. Meaning, they’re definitely doing something right. Designed like an “All American Diner”, The Market Grill exudes a casual atmosphere that serves honest and generous portions of food.

the market grill interior

The Food

The secret behind their success? Definitely their charbroiler that utilizes charcoal to grill their meats. This gives their awesome wagyu steaks that nice smoky flavour and locks in the juiciness of the meat while possessing a well-cooked crusty exterior.

the market grill farmers hash

Farmer’s Hash, $24

Sweet Potato, Potato, Farmer’s Sausage, Caramelized Onion, Beans And Poached Egg.

The egg was beautifully cooked and after bursting that yolk, all that creamy goodness just spread out evenly throughout the dish. The portion was extremely generous but I honestly feel the price is a little steep, just a little.

 the market grill lobster benedict

Lobster Benedict, $32 / Salmon Benedict, $18

Poached Eggs, Hollandaise Sauce, Capers, Mixed Salad And House Dressing

THEY USE REAL LOBSTER MEAT! And it’s super sweet and fresh too! For $32? Now this is definitely value-for-money.

For its Salmon counterpart, they cure the salmon in house. This results in a less salty smoked salmon compared to what’s readily available in the market.

the market grill lobster roll

Lobster Roll, $52

Whole Lobster Deshelled with herbed pommery mayo mounted on a toasted brioche roll, topped with tobiko

This is definitely one of the stars of The Market Grill. They use a super fresh 500g (on average) whole lobster. The tobiko gives an added texture and there’s hints of mustard in every bite.

I’m also told that when it comes to lobster rolls, The Market Grill are the pioneers in Singapore and seeing as how long they’ve been around, I believe them.

Wagyu Tri Tip 200g / 300g , $49 / $65

Grain fed. Red Wine Jus Served With Onion Confit And Mash Potato

Their meats are all imported from Australia and definitely a MUST TRY. It’s so juicy and tender that you can even eat it without the red wine sauce! (Of course, with the red wine sauce, it just elevated the awesomeness of this dish). Like I mentioned above, the trick is their charbroil grill.

the market grill charbroil grill

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Yes for two reasons. The lobster and the steak. They’re reasonably priced for premium ingredients (especially that live lobster) and they taste so damn good! I would come back over and over again for sure!

CasusGrill A Portable BBQ Pit That’s Ready To Cook In 5 Minutes – Available At Swiss Butchery

James Chan

Starting A Fire At A Barbeque

If there’s one thing I detest more than anything at a barbeque, it’s the starting of a fire. If you don’t understand the pain and suffering behind that statement, you’re definitely one of those people who specialize in eye power. Shame on you. For my more hands on brethren, it must be a real drag to look like someone who’s just come out of a coal mine at a barbeque party. Your hands are black, you’re literally sweating buckets and your arms feel like they’re about to fall off from coaxing the fire with a make-shift fan. Not the classiest of looks for ANY social event wouldn’t you agree?

CasusGrill Set up

Revolutionizing Barbeques With The CasusGrill

Enter the CasusGrill. A portable BBQ pit that can be set up and ready to cook in a mere 5 minutes! (Sans the coal miner look) How it works is really simple. You light up the four corners of the grill and just wait for the heat to spread throughout the whole grill. Amazing!

CasusGrill 5 minute bbq

What I Love About The CasusGrill

  • Portable, light and easy to carry around
  • I don’t have to get my hands dirty ever again with charcoal
  • It reaches optimum grilling temperature in a matter of minutes
  • A consistent, even temperature throughout the grill ensures that your food is not just delicious (no matter your culinary expertise) but evenly cooked as well and oh-so-tender
  • The whole grill is eco-friendly and biodegradable
  • You can set up a barbeque literally anywhere with no hassle at all

But there are obviously some aspects that I didn’t like as well

CasusGrill cons

Cons Of The CasusGrill

  • You have a relatively small surface area to cook on
  • If you cut your meat into small bits, they run the risk of falling through the gaps and onto the charcoal
  • It has a grilling lifespan of about 60 minutes and it’s gone from your life forever (okay that’s a tad dramatic)

Where Can One Find The CasusGrill

Pop into ANY SWISS BUTCHERY outlet and you’ll find the super portable CasusGrill retailing at $18. I highly recommend their OP Ribs ($13/100grams) or their Ribeye ($7.80/100 grams). If you want to have the ultimate barbeque experience, Swiss Butchery even goes the extra mile and will age your meat for you FOR FREE! Happy eating!

Enjoy Authentic German Burgers At Picturesque Hans Im Glück

James Chan

Hans Im Glück

Hans Im Glück is a German Burger bar and a must visit for all you Instagram lovers because the place is so darn pretty! Following a consistent dreamy and foresty theme, they even went so far as to import their wood from Germany!

hans im gluck sauces

Located at the International Building, Hans Im Glück houses two areas. One for dining and the other for chugging them tasty cocktails (the bar). Both areas come with indoor and alfresco options.

The Food

The menu can be a little challenging for some (me included). Most of the items on the menu are German words and I had no inkling how to pronounce them. Stick to the good old “point and order”, you can’t go wrong there. That aside, even the menu is so pretty! It was designed like a fairy tale storybook that depicts the story of Hans and his eventful journey home.

At Hans Im Glück, on top of the usual Beef and Chicken Burgers, they have Vegan and Vegetarian Burgers too! These burgers come served from a choice of Sourdough Bun, Multigrain Bun or Naked (ironically this means it comes with no buns). Their buns are also produced by a local German Bakery by the way!

As for your sides, you can choose from Geleit (Mixed Salad), Krautknolle (German White Cabbage Salad), Fritten (Fries) or Susskartoffel-fritten (Sweet Potato Fries). I recommend the Krautknolle as it refreshes your palate with its sourness and makes every bite of your burger seem like a new one.

hans im gluck birkenwald

Birkenwald With Sourdough, $16

Beef and Mushroom Burger

You get the feeling that they’re all about enjoying food and also looking after your body. The Birkenwald is no exception with their Australian imported beef and contains 20% less fat than normal market standards. This is my favorite burger HANDS DOWN. You can never go wrong with beef and mushroom. Hans Im Glück ups their game by spreading that secret, slightly spicy, special sauce on the patty. I’m pretty sure there’s wasabi or mustard in there.

hans im gluck geselle

Geselle With Multigrain, $15

Chicken Breast And Bacon

I’ve always said that chicken breast is a hard meat to work with (literally). Just slightly overcooking it can make it dry and flaky. Fret not, the chicken here was tender and perfectly cooked. However, the bacon was just a tad dry. I don’t know about you but I can overlook the sinfulness of having bacon in my meal just because I ate this burger with the multigrain bun (and this is why I’m fat).

hans im gluck wolpertinger

Wolpertinger Naked, $15

Spicy Patty With Aged Cheddar And Avocado Cream

This is a vegetarian burger and I’m honestly surprised at how much I liked it. The spicy patty is only slightly spicy so don’t get your hopes up spice lovers. But, it works really well with the secret sauce (they have it in ALL of their burgers). I especially loved the avocado cream. It was cool, refreshingly sour and very tasty.

hans im gluck cocktails

Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?

You cannot find these German burgers ANYWHERE in Singapore. It’s a true German experience without having to leave the country! Hans Im Glück’s attention to detail is remarkable and burgers aside, they make some pretty great tasting cocktails too! Just remember to save yourself the embarrassment, point and order!

Till 5pm – Top up $5 for a hot/cold beverage and a side

From 5pm – Top up $15 for an alcoholic cocktail (yums) and a side

They have limited seating so I would suggest to make a reservation via CHOPE with the link below:

BPC Cafe – Home Cooked Meals Passed Down From Generation to Generation

James Chan

BPC Cafe

Run by two brothers with a strong passion for cooking, BPC Cafe recently opened for business earlier in 2018. They’re located at Burlington Square, where the competition for the office crowd and students from Laselle and SOTA is extremely strong.

BPC Cafe Storefront

So how have they survived thus far? The answer lies in their competitive pricing and of course their delicious rice bowls.

The Food

In a short interview with one of the brothers, Mr Vincent, I found out that BPC stands for Beef, Pork and Chicken. Which are the ingredients you’ll find in any of their dishes.

Similar to a Japanese fast food brand that specializes in rice bowls (not mentioning names here) BUT the difference here is, BPC Cafe’s bowls actually taste good! BPC’s rice bows allow one to reminisce about the joys of good old home cooking. Also, the recipes for these bowls are interestingly passed down from their mother and from watching her cook when they were younger. Trust me, when someone says that, expectations will be raised (like mine were).

BPC Cafe Black Pepper Beef Bowl

Black Pepper Beef Rice Bowl, $8.90

The beef was extremely tender and well marinated with slight sweet and spicy notes pleasantly enveloping your palate. Everything in the bowl has been well thought of. Personally, for me, I felt the portion was a little small though. But I’m a savage. This was definitely my personal favorite!

BPC Cafe Bulgogi Spicy Chicken

Bulgogi Spicy Chicken Rice Bowl, $7.90

The chicken wasn’t spicy! But they gave a generous amount of chicken though! It was tender, flavorful and I love how each individual ingredient works well together to create a wholesome and appealing dish. Oh and did you know that they make the kimchi in house?

BPC Cafe Crispy Pork Chop Nppdle

Crispy Pork Chop Noodle, $6.50

One of their new introductions to their existing menu. Looked a little plain to be honest but that pork chop, my goodness. For that price, it’s so much value! You get a crispy crust with tender meat and you’ll definitely feel full for sure. Even if you don’t, just order another one lah!

Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?

For the price and the quality of food you get, I would give it a solid YES from me. Everything I ordered was delicious! Remember how at the start of this article I said my expectations were raised because Mr Vincent told me all his dishes were from recipes passed on to him from his mother? Let’s just say my expectations were well met.

Why are People Still Buying Huoyanshaiziniu’s Beef Cubes?

James Chan

It is a given fact that Singaporeans are curious foodies. We tend to want to check out new food places that have just launched. Especially ones that have been widely advertised by various more well-established media companies.

We are no strangers to snaking queues outside food establishments, and are indifferent when told of the long waiting times.

Huoyanshaiziniu Beef cubes

Huoyanshaiziniu Beef Cubes

This is no different at Huoyanshiziniu. When they first launched in early February, there was a crowd almost every time I was in the area. Undeterred, I continued keeping an eye open for when there was less of a queue. Finally, when my curiosity and hunger got the better of me, and I too joined the craze and ordered a portion.

It was 7pm, dinnertime, and I was hungry. From word of mouth I learnt that there was a rice set option available, and I decided to go with that. Taking into account that it was dinnertime, it came as a nice surprise to me that there was not much of a queue. Maybe just 3 couples ahead of me.

I soon found out why.

“Sorry, we are out of rice.”

The first thoughts that ran through my head was along the lines of, “If you guys are not selling rice during dinner hours, then what exactly are you guys selling for dinner?”

A hungry man is an angry man, and the hunger in my stomach needed satiating, so I just got the regular beef cubes before I turned into She-Hulk.

Whilst waiting for my serving, I learnt that the beef was Angus Ribeye beef from Australia. And as I watched customer after customer receive their purchases in that dinky takeaway box, I wondered if that $6.90 price tag justified the cost of imported beef.

Huoyanshaiziniu Beef small portions

Excuse me, I did not order that

At the first bite, the beef was juicy and addictive. But at the second, third and fourth bite, I realised how well-done the beef was. It was overcooked.

Maybe I picked an “accidental” cube. I scooped another one, and nope, still as overly cooked.

Don’t get me wrong, I really liked the juiciness of the snack. But the fact that it was too well-done spoiled the overall impression of it.

Besides the beef being too well-done, I realised that in that meagre portion that I was served, some chunks of “beef” turned out to be just FAT. I mean, some fat was alright, but the entire, I mean ENTIRE cube was just a hunk of beef fat.

Excuse me, I that was not what I asked for in my order.

Huoyanshaiziniu Beef cooked well done in a bad way

Research

Still not getting why people are willing to pay close to $7 for overdone beef, I did some research of my own.

I went back the next day at about 3pm, and ordered the same thing. This time there was more of a queue, but the beef still tasted like a letdown. At this point I figured the cook might have been grilling the beef on the grill for too long before blowtorching it. Thus making it too well-done (and not well done in a good way).

As with most other Millennials, I dove into social media for more answers. From the pictures and reviews, I figured that customers who loved the beef cubes were the ones who got them prepared medium rare (as was initially advertised by Huoyanshaiziniu). I can only imagine how awesome it tasted: soft, succulent beef with a lightly charred outside and a smoky flavour to go with it.

In Conclusion

With the aftertaste of leftover disappointment, and an emptiness in my stomach, I can only conclude that the chefs at Huoyanshaiziniu need to serve more consistent portions if they want to keep their loyal customers coming back.

Origin Grill & Bar – When In Doubt, Go With The Chef’s Recommendations

James Chan

Origin Grill & Bar

The hardest part of walking into a new restaurant (they’ve been around for a month) is that you don’t have any reviews online to figure out what to order. Which was exactly my dilemma as I skimmed through the fancy menu. So I did what most people would do, order from the Chef’s Recommendation page!

Before we move on to the food, I should point out that Origin Grill & Bar has exceptional service. The waiters are attentive, polite and know just the right moment to approach a table to enquire whether the diners like their food. But it doesn’t stop at the waiters, the restaurant manager and the sous chef do that too! It might be a tad disconcerting to some but you can tell they genuinely want you to have a good dining experience at Origin Grill.

origin grill pan seared breaded cod cake

The Food

Pan Seared Breaded Cod Cake, $18

There was little to no seafood aftertaste which speaks volumes of its freshness. The cod meat was tender, soft, fluffy and just pure joy to consume. The element of this dish that just stole my heart (or my stomach rather) was that hollandaise sauce (they make it in house). My only gripe with this magnifishcent creation was that they shouldn’t serve it with the slice of lemon. The hollandaise sauce has lemon in it already so when you squeeze the lemon, it becomes a tad too tangy.

origin grill spaghetti with jumbo crab meat

Spaghetti With Jumbo Crab Meat, $28

Al dente, just the way I like it. Firmness and springiness of the pasta aside, the portion of crab meat that they provide is DA BOMB! Every mouthful of pasta definitely had bits of crab meat in it. Crab meat is chocked full of sweet and tasty goodness so imagine that coating almost every stand of pasta. Heaven!

origin grill John Stone Grass-Fed & Dry-Aged 35 Days Striploin On The Bone 400

John Stone Grass-Fed & Dry-Aged 35 Days Striploin On The Bone 400g, $98

The star of the night. A grass-fed AND dry-aged beef! Lots of expectations were placed on this for sure. See, a grass-fed cow has literally fed on grass its whole life. This results in a meat that does not taste so “beefy”. Then, to add on, this beef has been dry-aged for 35 days. Why does dry-aged beef cost so much and taste so great? The longer the beef is aged, the longer time the natural enzymes in the meat has to break down the muscle tissue of the meat. It brings out the flavor and improves the texture of the meat significantly. Couldn’t resist that bit of trivia.

Striploin comes from an area of the cow where the muscles aren’t usually put to work (like my nonexistent abs). It’s one of the most flavorful and tender cuts. At Origin Grill, the fat of the striploin was rendered perfectly and the taste was exquisite. I ordered medium rare and it was perfectly cooked and tender-to-the-bite. Cooking steak is an art and the culinary team at Origin Grill are the Picassos of the culinary world.

Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?

If it wasn’t apparent throughout my ENTIRE article, then I’ll just say it’s a huge YES from me. I can tell that every dish has been well thought of in terms of nutritional value and taste, the plating is stellar and the service is excellent. Origin Grill is definitely on its way to becoming an icon in Singapore! Well done Origin Grill!

Enjoying Bistecca the Tuscan Way

James Chan

The Weekly Glutton (14/8 – 20/8)

The Weekly Glutton features dining delights that have impressed us one way or another (or not) and are places we highly recommend you patronize.

Don’t forget to subscribe if you want to be updated weekly! Or you could bookmark this page or even do BOTH!

bistecca entrance

Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse

As promised, this week we’re featuring a non-Michelin joint. They should be a contender for a star though. Here’s why.

The Food

Bistecca dessert pana cotta

It’s a great place for dates when you soak in the whole dim and luxurious atmosphere BUT it also depends on what you order.

If you’re ordering the 1.1kg Florentina Wagyu Steak, in order to enjoy it, you got to get down and dirty (with your hands) to appreciate the whole steak. Not something you’d want your date to see especially if it’s the first date.

Bistecca steak

Florentina 1.1kg, $188

Yeah, it’s a pretty pricey piece of beef. So let’s break this T-Bone steak down in terms of value to see whether you’re getting the bang for your buck.

  • It’s 1.1kg (inclusive of the bone)
  • Comes from an Australian bred cow
  • The F1 grade means it’s not a pure bred. It’s usually a cross=breed between an Angus or a Holstein cow and a Japanese Black Bull
  • Beef Marbling Scale score of 6 (The scale runs up to 12)
  • The T-Bone contains the Short Loin & Tenderloin cuts of the cow (They’re the most expensive cuts by the way)

I’ve done some cross referencing and Bistecca doesn’t diverge too far away from the market price of such a relatively premium meat.

Taste

All steaks are served with red wine steak sauce, mustard and chimichurri dips. Though I feel that the steak is best eaten as is.

You’ve got the best of both worlds here with a little bit of Fillet Mignon (the tenderloin) and some Short Loin. You won’t believe how juicy and tasty the steak is until you’ve experienced it first-hand.

I started with the Short Loin and boy oh boy, the fats literally just melted and dissipated in my mouth! I didn’t even have to chew it!

Moving on to the Fillet Mignon (Tenderloin)……..

I know it sounds lame but as the name suggests, IT’S SO TENDER! Unfortunately, the trade-off is that this cut has the least amount of fats.

Animated GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Service

The service staff were extremely attentive and always wore smiles for the patrons even though they seemed pretty busy with endless orders coming from every direction. Good job Bistecca!

Reservations

Once again, I made reservations for this a week before. Judging from how packed it was over there (mostly an ang moh crowd), you’d want to make reservations a couple of days in advance.
