Let’s Get A Hokey Bowl @ Hokey Poki, The New Joint At FOMO Singapore

James Chan

Hokey Poki

What’s in a Hokey bowl? Let’s just say it’s totally up to you because you get to pick and choose. While the concept might sound familiar to some Japanese/Hawaiian fusion f&b outlets (that have huge spiders found in their bowls). Hokey Poki is totally different with their product offerings catered to the local Singaporean palate (and definitely no spiders).

The Food

There are 11 different mains to select. Of course you have your standard Salmon Poke Bowl BUT be spoiled for choice with selections like Laksa Mentai Soft Shell Crab, Sambal Shishamo and Wasabi Mayo Chicken!

If you thought that was all, you can even choose your own base (Salad, Purple Rice (Hot/Cold), Quinoa and Cold Cha Soba) !

Hokey Poki Salmon Poke

Salmon Poke with Cold Cha Soba, $10.90

Seasoned Salmon Cubes with Mango, Jellyfish and Onsen Egg

There’s a lot of different flavour profiles in this dish but somehow everything blends together perfectly. The soba was nice and firm (not to mention tasty), the salmon was fresh, the onsen egg accentuated the nice creamy texture of the salmon and for $10.90 you get a really generous amount of salmon and jellyfish!

 Hokey Poki Sambal Shishamo

Sambal Shishamo with Hot Purple Rice, $11.90

Grilled Shishamo with Asian Spicy Sauce and Seasoned Seaweed

Purple rice is something new to me. Apparently, it possesses antioxidants (a trait that brown rice does not have) and I honestly think it tastes way better than brown rice. Moving on to the Shishamo, 2 words – SUPER TASTY. But then again, Shishamo isn’t for everyone. If you like Shishamo, the Shishamo here is really good! This dish is slightly spicy so just a quick heads up.

Hokey Poki Sushi Taco

Sushi Taco, $5.90 For 1 / $7.90 For 2

The Sushi Taco has been gaining popularity this year. Choose from a selection of 10 savoury Sushi Tacos at Hokey Poki! We tried the Cheesy Prawn, Otah, Sambal Soft Shell Crab and Shishamo Sushi Tacos.

The amazing thing about the Sushi Taco at Hokey Poki is that the tasty Seaweed Taco Shell doesn’t break when you bite into it because it’s being held together by a light tempura batter!

Hokey Poki Smores Taco

But wait, there’s more! Hokey Poki has AN AMAZING CREATION for all dessert lovers! The S’mores Taco! Nothing can go wrong with marshmallows and chocolate yeah? But to up their game, they make their marshmallows in house! This is a definite MUST TRY!

Hokey Poki Soft Shell Crab Taco

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Tasty rice bowls at affordable prices, serves taco sushis and that DELECTABLE S’MORES TACO? Hokey Poki gets a HELL YEAH from me.

BPC Cafe – Home Cooked Meals Passed Down From Generation to Generation

James Chan

BPC Cafe

Run by two brothers with a strong passion for cooking, BPC Cafe recently opened for business earlier in 2018. They’re located at Burlington Square, where the competition for the office crowd and students from Laselle and SOTA is extremely strong.

BPC Cafe Storefront

So how have they survived thus far? The answer lies in their competitive pricing and of course their delicious rice bowls.

The Food

In a short interview with one of the brothers, Mr Vincent, I found out that BPC stands for Beef, Pork and Chicken. Which are the ingredients you’ll find in any of their dishes.

Similar to a Japanese fast food brand that specializes in rice bowls (not mentioning names here) BUT the difference here is, BPC Cafe’s bowls actually taste good! BPC’s rice bows allow one to reminisce about the joys of good old home cooking. Also, the recipes for these bowls are interestingly passed down from their mother and from watching her cook when they were younger. Trust me, when someone says that, expectations will be raised (like mine were).

BPC Cafe Black Pepper Beef Bowl

Black Pepper Beef Rice Bowl, $8.90

The beef was extremely tender and well marinated with slight sweet and spicy notes pleasantly enveloping your palate. Everything in the bowl has been well thought of. Personally, for me, I felt the portion was a little small though. But I’m a savage. This was definitely my personal favorite!

BPC Cafe Bulgogi Spicy Chicken

Bulgogi Spicy Chicken Rice Bowl, $7.90

The chicken wasn’t spicy! But they gave a generous amount of chicken though! It was tender, flavorful and I love how each individual ingredient works well together to create a wholesome and appealing dish. Oh and did you know that they make the kimchi in house?

BPC Cafe Crispy Pork Chop Nppdle

Crispy Pork Chop Noodle, $6.50

One of their new introductions to their existing menu. Looked a little plain to be honest but that pork chop, my goodness. For that price, it’s so much value! You get a crispy crust with tender meat and you’ll definitely feel full for sure. Even if you don’t, just order another one lah!

Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?

For the price and the quality of food you get, I would give it a solid YES from me. Everything I ordered was delicious! Remember how at the start of this article I said my expectations were raised because Mr Vincent told me all his dishes were from recipes passed on to him from his mother? Let’s just say my expectations were well met.

Depizza Recreates The Pizza Dining Experience Through It’s Unique Local Flavors

James Chan

Depizza

From a couple of fellows who have mad love for local Singaporean cuisine and an equal love for pizza comes their brain child, Depizza. Open for business at Boat Quay since mid-February, Depizza specializes in fusing both their loves together (in an extremely DE-licious manner mind you).

For you OG purists, fret not, Depizza also offers all time classics like Pepperoni, Hawaiian, 4 cheeses and their all-time crowd favorite – The 4 Hit Combo.

The Food

I was unfortunate to have gone for the tasting by myself so there was a limit to the amount of pizzas I could try. I opted for their famous Chilli Crab Pizza and a side of Fat Die Fries. Even then, I wasn’t able to finish everything. It’s that filling. I’ll have to try the Nasi Lemak Pizza ($24) and the Gu Lou Yok Pizza ($22) the next time though!

Chilli Crab Pizza. $26

The first thing that hits you is the familiar Chilli Crab fragrance. Just from the smell alone, one can tell that this dish is the real deal. I was particularly impressed with the generous amounts of real crab meat I could see scattered all over the pizza.

I’m told that lots of Research and Development went into creating this pizza. Well, to me, all that definitely paid off. The taste is definitely legit. Although, it is slightly spicier than most Chilli Crabs I’ve eaten in Singapore (which is a good thing). The icing on the cake? Their MANTOU CRUST! A crispy exterior with a soft and fluffy dough filling!

depizza fat die fries

Fat Die Fries, $14

This is essentially Poutine, a Canadian classic (having a Canadian chef has its perks). French fries, cheese and an extremely sinful beef demiglace sauce. When I asked what went into the demiglace sauce, they told me it was a secret. Okay, no complaints there for this plate of sin. Just take my money.

depizza assorted sauces

Extra Spicy Sauce

To complement your pizzas, there are various condiments at your disposal. You have your standard cheese and chilli flakes AND you have their in-house made sauces – garlic, green chilli pesto and red chili (this is like your chicken rice chilli but on steroids).

If that isn’t good enough for you and you would like something spicy, request for the EXTRA SPICY SAUCE. It’s only meant for people who can “tahan” spice though because that sauce is made from a Carolina Reaper (one of the world’s hottest peppers). Got me perspiring from my first bite.

Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?

When I eat out, it’s all about the price to satisfaction to how full I am ratio. Depizza checks all the criteria I have and I find myself wanting to visit again and again to try different flavors! So it’s a definite yes from me!

Caffe B Is Now At Club Street – Casual Italian Cuisine With A Japanese Twist

James Chan

Caffe B

Originally from Marina Bay Sands, Caffe B has since shifted to Club Street since January! If you’re not otherwise acquainted with them (YOU SHOULD BE), they are a casual restaurant that serves Italian cuisine with a Japanese twist.

Their new restaurant has THREE LEVELS that houses a bar (first floor), a dining area (second floor) and an exclusive area for private events (third floor). The place even has a lift to travel up and down! Don’t be lazy though, take the damn stairs.

Also, their service is impeccable (and I don’t use this word a lot mind you). Big shout out to good ol George, the most attentive waiter I’ve ever come across.

The Food

I thoroughly enjoyed EVERY dish that came out of the kitchen. Here’s a list of what I ate but I’m pretty certain that even if you don’t order something from this list below and go for something else, it’ll taste pretty darn good.

Farmers Egg, $12

There’s egg yolk, UNI (sea urchin), lemon jam, clam espuna. What’s not to love? And just look at the pretty presentation!

Hiroshima Oysters, $15

If you think this is just a simple oyster on a bed of pebbles, you’re sorely mistaken. There’s ponzu jelly, wasabi foam, ikura and yuzu dressing. Sounds complex but tastes so great!

Maguro Tuna on Crackers, $12

I expected a crunch when I sunk my teeth into the pastry but nope, what you get is a really soft and fulfilling bite. Also, they use truffle mayonnaise and you can smell that a mile away.

Beef Carpaccio, $18

All the dishes are great but this would have to be one of my favs for the night. Tender Japanese Wagyu meat with more truffle and vinegar (to break down the enzymes of the meat even further) just hits the spot for any meal.

Octopus Salad, $16

This is on the top of the list in terms of getting the most value. Just look at the size of the octopus tentacle! It’s longer than my… face. The octopus was perfectly grilled and tender to the bite.

Scallop With Turnip & Brussel Sprouts, $22

Beautifully seared scallops on a bed of tender turnips is an awesome textual combination. Okay, maybe not the Brussel sprouts. I’m not a fan but the broth at the end tastes so good! Practically licked the plate clean (gave the Brussel sprouts to someone else)

Melanzane Pizza With Beef Bolognaise, $22

When it comes to pizza, I don’t usually eat the crust but the way it’s cooked at Caffe B, the crust was soft and so addictive I finished every single bite. No wonder I’m putting on weight. Goodness. The minced beef was also extremely flavorful.

caffe b club street old fashioned

Don’t forget to pair your food with a fine selection of cocktails carefully picked to complement the food by their Mixologist, Mr Michael! I had the Old Fashioned!

Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?

This place is getting a huge yes from me. It’s a place I can bring my family and friends to impress them without worrying about the taste of the food, the money or the ambience. Checks every positive flag in my book for sure.
