BPC Cafe – Home Cooked Meals Passed Down From Generation to Generation

Run by two brothers with a strong passion for cooking, BPC Cafe recently opened for business earlier in 2018. They’re located at Burlington Square, where the competition for the office crowd and students from Laselle and SOTA is extremely strong.

So how have they survived thus far? The answer lies in their competitive pricing and of course their delicious rice bowls.

The Food

In a short interview with one of the brothers, Mr Vincent, I found out that BPC stands for Beef, Pork and Chicken. Which are the ingredients you’ll find in any of their dishes.

Similar to a Japanese fast food brand that specializes in rice bowls (not mentioning names here) BUT the difference here is, BPC Cafe’s bowls actually taste good! BPC’s rice bows allow one to reminisce about the joys of good old home cooking. Also, the recipes for these bowls are interestingly passed down from their mother and from watching her cook when they were younger. Trust me, when someone says that, expectations will be raised (like mine were).

The beef was extremely tender and well marinated with slight sweet and spicy notes pleasantly enveloping your palate. Everything in the bowl has been well thought of. Personally, for me, I felt the portion was a little small though. But I’m a savage. This was definitely my personal favorite!

The chicken wasn’t spicy! But they gave a generous amount of chicken though! It was tender, flavorful and I love how each individual ingredient works well together to create a wholesome and appealing dish. Oh and did you know that they make the kimchi in house?

One of their new introductions to their existing menu. Looked a little plain to be honest but that pork chop, my goodness. For that price, it’s so much value! You get a crispy crust with tender meat and you’ll definitely feel full for sure. Even if you don’t, just order another one lah!

 

Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?

For the price and the quality of food you get, I would give it a solid YES from me. Everything I ordered was delicious! Remember how at the start of this article I said my expectations were raised because Mr Vincent told me all his dishes were from recipes passed on to him from his mother? Let’s just say my expectations were well met.

Machida Shoten

Almost a week after our last trip to Japan Food Town, M and I found ourselves back again. But how can you blame us, the food there is just so satisfying! This week, we paid a visit to Machida Shoten, a ramen place from the Kanagawa Prefecture.

Shoyu Tonkatsu Cha-Shu Ramen, $18++

At Machida Shoten, customers are allowed to be as picky as they want.

Called lekei, Machida Shoten offers a unique concept of allowing customers to personalise their bowl of ramen to suit their preferences. One can expect to choose from light to Japan taste to strong flavour for their soup, and noodle textures ranging from soft, regular and hard.

The noodles were well-made, carrying a springy texture. They were not overly starchy, and were a good compliment to the rich broth.

One of the things I love here is the fact that customers can be as picky as they want. Can’t decide between a pork-based broth or soya sauced based one? Why not both!

Initially, I took tentative sips of the soup, but eventually got used to the salty pork- flavoured soup. As a testament to how full-bodied the flavour of the soup was, we realised that we had no need for the condiments by the side, as each sip carried a fresh new burst of flavours.

However, something that M realised mid-meal was that her soup was more oily than mine. She had the “light” flavoured soup, while I went for the Japan taste option. We figured that this may be because the oil from the char-shu mixed better with a richer broth, so my soup was less oily.

By the side of the bowl sits 5 tantalisingly thick-cut slices of char-shu. Alas, don’t let size fool you though. Despite the thickness of the meat, the char-shu slices were tender and soft, with good meat to fat ratio.

My first impression of the char-shu was how incredibly break-in-your-mouth soft it was, followed by awe when the fat that melted in my mouth. If there was a heaven, let it be filled with this char-shu for all of eternity.

Call me impressionable, but never have I had as many char-shu slices that were of such great quality. Usual ramen places serve at most 4 thin slices of char-shu, or 2 thick slices. But here you go, 5 thick, generous cuts of char-shu, sitting in full decadence at the side of your bowl, waiting for you to sink your teeth into them.

Conclusion

Different ramen places have different specialties, and if you particularly fancy char-shu, then you should give this place a visit!

Yayoi

I often go to Orchard Road to shop, eat, watch a movie or meet with friends over a cup of coffee. And if you love Japanese food like me, you will know that there are a plethora of good Japanese restaurants around Orchard Road to choose from. Today, I’m going to talk about one Japanese restaurant which is quite affordable and serves good quality Japanese food – Yayoi.

Yayoi serves teishoku or set meals with prices ranging from $10 to $20++. Yayoi has 5 branches in Singapore but the branch I am going to recommend today is at the one at Somerset 313. You can find the restaurant located just side-by-side with MK Suki, a popular Thai hot pot restaurant on B3.

Another unique point of Yayoi is that you place an order through an iPad, which is mounted at each table. After ordering, you can monitor the status of your dish whether it is being prepared or has been served. This reduces the number of staff in the restaurant to just a few waiters and cashiers.

I have eaten at Yayoi several times. The food has been consistently good and the price is not high like most good Japanese restaurants in Singapore. I personally like the mix teishoku (fried pork cutlet and breaded prawn with egg) and the pork hamburg set.

Shouga Nabe

Yesterday I ordered a special nabe set – Shouga Nabe (pork ginger hot pot served with fried white fish and rice). The soup was flavorful but not too salty. Succulent sliced pork and moist pork balls came along with the soup. A generous portion of fried white fish accompanied the set. Overall, I think it is a good deal for $18.9++.

In case you are around Orchard Road and are in the mood for Japanese food which does not break your bank, do give Yayoi a try.
