WHAT IS THE SINGAPORE COFFEE FESTIVAL?

The Singapore Coffee Festival, organised by The Straits Times and presented by DBS Bank, is back this year! Featuring brews from the best local and international café’s, explore the craftsmanship behind specialty coffee and uncover Singapore’s unique and rich ‘kopi’ heritage.

WHO’S GOING TO BE THERE

With beans, blends, gadgets and machines exhibited and available for purchase from over 100 different exhibitors from Singapore’s coffee and lifestyle scene, as well as notable international entrants, it is unlikely that you’d run out of things to see and brews to try.

As you chill out in one of their specially designed social spaces, or while admiring the panoramic waterfront view, enjoy local music acts like Ffion, Inch and Stopgap at this year’s Singapore Coffee Festival. A grand total of six local artistes will grace the stage over the three day event.

THE PROGRAMME

There is definitely going to be lots to see and do at this year’s Singapore Coffee Festival. Besides merely enjoying your cuppa, learn how to brew the perfect cup of joe by signing up for one of the Lab Sessions offered!

The Straits Times, Bettr Barista and Common Man Coffee organised The Lab Sessions last year. These sessions focused on topics like barista skills, latte art, starting a café, and chocolate pairings.

Grab your tickets soon, because tickets to the Lab Sessions last year were snapped up almost as soon as they were released!

MORE THAN A ONE-OFF FESTIVAL

“Design The Cup” competition – Entrants submitted illustrations, in the hopes of getting their illustration featured on 6,000 coffee cups for the festival.

The winning illustration, above, is by local Temasek Polytechnic student Ellen Chee.

10 lucky winners were given the opportunity to visit 4 local café’s to enjoy and sample great coffee. Not to mention hanging out with local Radio DJ Desiree Lai! (Jealous much!). The winners also got to take a behind the scenes look at what goes into the perfect cup of coffee. The baristas also taught them some neat tips and tricks!

Brunch on Budget

The Weekly Glutton (10/6 – 16/7)

The Weekly Glutton features dining delights that have impressed us one way or another (or not) and are places we highly recommend you patronize.

Don’t forget to subscribe if you want to be updated weekly! Or you could bookmark this page or even do BOTH!

Tolido’s Espresso Nook – Brunch without Breaking Your Bank

It’s easy to find good brunch places in Singapore. However, it’s not easy to find ones that are not expensive. A brunch/breakfast and a coffee in Singapore generally sets you back more than 20 dollars!!!

When we come across a cafe which serves yummy and cheap brunches, we are ever so eager to recommend said cafe to our readers. It so happens that this week, we found such a cafe! Enter Tolido’s Espresso Nook on Crawford Lane.

The Menu

Tolido’s Espresso Nook serves all day breakfast, pasta and a few sandwiches. For breakfast, you get most egg variations here like omelette, scrambled egg or sunny side up. If you are vegetarian, there are few sweet selections you can choose from such as French toast or pancakes.

Fancy something more Italian in nature? They offer a decent variety of pastas albeit with a spicy twist. There’s also an interesting locally inspired dish like 462 prawn laksa pasta. Prices start from 10 dollars. We could not believe that our All American breakfast costs just 10 bucks. A great deal indeed!

The Ambience

The cafe is small and cosy with both indoor and outdoor dining options. Choose from a normal dining table or a couch to gobble up your brunch. The latter is usually occupied whenever we visit the place though. It can get pretty packed during lunch hour as there are many offices nearby so come early or after the peak hour if you want to avoid the crowds.

The Food

We’ve tried both breakfast and pasta here before. The food is decent although we would not say that they serve the best brunch in Singapore. Their serving of an American breakfast is relatively smaller compared to other places but how can we complain? It costs less than half of what most cafes in Singapore charge!

If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss their Pandan waffle, which comes with vanilla ice cream and Gula Melaka drizzled on top. We highly commend Tolido’s Espresso Nook for their effort in serving good and sincere food at an affordable price.

The Coffee

Their coffee is lovely. They source their coffee beans from Yahava Koffeeworks. If you are a coffee addict like me, don’t leave the place without trying their cuppa.

Where to Locate Them

Tolido’s Espresso Nook is located on the ground floor of an old building along Crawford Lane. Not many people may know where it is. It’s near Lavender MRT but I usually go there from Nicoll Highway MRT or sometimes walk from Bugis or Arab Street Area.

They are also open quite early in the morning on weekdays (8 AM). Do note that they are closed every Monday!
