Grains & Hops – National Day Menu Available Till End August, Look Out For The Super Creative Prawn Noodle Croquette

Located on the 10th floor of the luxury airline travel themed YOTEL Singapore, Grains & Hops has released their National Day menu and I think they pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one.

The Food

Available till 31st August 2018, Singaporeans will have a pretty long window to try some of these amazing local inspired dishes. Pair them dishes with Grains & Hops’ very own brew of craft beer – with its light fruity notes and slightly bitter aftertaste, knocking back a couple of pints will definitely be a pleasant experience.

Chilli Crab Rillette, $16

Chilli Crab is definitely a no brainer when it comes to local Singaporean cuisine. They are extremely generous with the fresh and tender crab meat and I must say that they’ve got the sweet and rich Chilli Ccrab flavors down to a T. The rice cracker gives this dish a nice crispy textured bite and definitely something new to me. I’m more of a mantou (Chinese steam buns) kind of guy when it comes to Chilli Crab.

The element in this dish that brings everything together is that sweet and sour chilli sauce. It tones down the strong seafood essence that comes along with oysters (especially when they’re fried). The tapioca crackers were light, crispy and extremely satisfying. This makes for a good accompaniment all types of alcohol. No I’m not an alcoholic.

This is definitely my all-time favorite for their National Day Menu. It’s a croquette but the magic is WHAT’S IN THE CROQUETTE. You’ll find a tantalizing broth of pork bones and prawn stock just waiting to attack your taste buds as your teeth breaks into the crispy exterior of the croquette. It’s GENIUS! But do let it cool for a couple of minutes upon serving. Like a xiao long bao, it can burn you if you’re too impatient. I recommend asking your friends to test the waters first (that’s what I did). Oh and to top it all off (quite literally) there’s a pretty big and fresh prawn for each ball!

I thought this was going to be super sweet but nope, it actually sat pretty well with my not-so-sweet palate. That chewy mochi textures go extremely well with that light kaya cream. Who would have thought?

Kinsa Sushi – A4 Wagyu Beef Rice Bowls That Even The Supreme Leader Can’t Resist

In his recent visit to Singapore, Kim Jong Un’s doppelganger went to a couple of restaurants with Kinsa Sushi being one of them. So what managed to pique the “supreme leader’s” interest?

The Food

Besides having a smart robot waiter (I named him Howard) to serve food to customers and a levitating sushi conveyor belt that utilizes magnetic tech, it all boils down to the taste of the food. Was it good?

Signature Wagyu Don

The Japanese Meat Grading Association (yeah it’s a legit thing) gives a score to each cow that range from C1 to A5, with A5 being the best quality. Kinsa Sushi imports A4 grade Wagyu beef so you do the math at the premium quality meat that’s placed in front of you.

I believe the amount of Wagyu meat Kinsa offers on each Wagyu don is more than generous for the price and IT’S SO TENDER AND DELICIOUS! Every bite was rich in fatty, beefy flavors and so juicy!

When they say “WITH WAGYU” they really mean just a dollop of Wagyu sashimi so don’t raise your expectations too high. HOWEVER, the sashimi makes up for the lack of wagyu. It’s everything you expect good sashimi to be; fresh, sweet, light and easy to go down but over at Kinsa, there’s an added twist – they melt in your mouth! Foodgasm!

Cucumber, Aburi Salmon, Purple Rice, Avocado and Ikura. A pretty safe yet tasty combination. Although, purple rice is definitely the healthier option so this means YOU CAN EAT MORE!

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

I wish I had more space to try the rest of the dishes but I assure you the Chirashi don and the Wagyu don are winners. Heck, if Kim Jung Un came here to eat, doppelganger or not, it means something yeah?

Lobster Claw Meat In Every Roll, Plans To Open More Locations Island wide

Look out for this new building called Oxley Tower along Robinson Road. Skidaddle over to the 2nd floor and you’ll find Chunky Lobsters. Chunky Lobsters is a small eatery but they’re HUGE in popularity with the office people over at the CBD. Expect an average waiting time of 15 to 20 minutes.

The Food

As their name suggests, Chunky Lobsters specializes in lobster rolls. The beauty of their menu is in its simplicity. You only have three different main product offerings to choose from. Also, all of their lobsters are imported all the way from Canada and flown in once a month. These lobsters are then stored in a cold room at -18 Degrees Celsius and delivered to their store 1 to 3 times a week to ensure customers have the freshest lobster experience.

Top up $0.90 cents for a drink with any purchase of their lobster rolls or add $3.90 for a drink and a bowl of lobster bisque!

Oh, and each serving comes with 3 generous rolls of sweet, juicy lobster claws. Need I say more?

Chunky’s Original, $16

For a true lobster experience at Chunky Lobsters, the Chunky’s Original is something not to be missed. The sweet lobster meat is met with a touch of mayo, lemon and something a little extra. I couldn’t really place my finger on it, but when I tried to get them to reveal the ingredients I was met with red tape.

Chunky’s Connecticut, $16

Alternatively, for the same price, you can opt for something more buttery to go with the sweetness of the lobster rolls. Slightly salty and sweet, each roll is pure joy and before you know it, it’s all gone!

Chunky’s Cheezy, $16

This is my favourite and for good reason. I mean, who doesn’t like cheese? (Unless you’re lactose intolerant, then I offer my sincere condolences) They use 4 different types of cheeses that results in a nice stretchy cheese that taste great and makes for a good insta story too!

Lobster Bisque, $3.90

It’s going to come in a small little cup so don’t look disappointed when you receive it (I might have looked a little sad). Taste wise, you have your distinct and wonderfully sweet crustacean flavors swimming around in the little bowl but it felt a tad lighter than the usual explosion of flavors I’m used to when it comes a crab or lobster bisque. Still, $3.90. I’ll drink one of those everyday if I could.

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

You’ll probably need to have your cholesterol levels checked if you eat this everyday but it’s a definite YES from me. There’s probably nowhere else in Singapore where you can find lobster rolls at such low prices.

If Robinson Road is too far for that Lobster craving, catch them at Singapore Garden Festival 2018 from 21st July to 3rd August 2018 @ Gardens By The Bay. They’re going to be one of the food vendors there and YOU CAN EXPECT A QUEUE for sure!

Uya 四代目菊川’s Unagi— That’s the One for Me

I’ve never really seen the point in queueing up for hours to get a seat at a restaurant, much less a bowl of unagi to be honest.

But I guess that is because I have never been much of a fan of unagi. Until now.

My heart was stolen one fateful Friday by a bowl of Hitsumabushi. Located in the heart of town, Uya 四代目菊川 ’s Hitsumabushi has made me appreciate unagi like never before.

Oh and the best part, there was not much of a queue even during lunchtime. The simple reason being that they have a larger restaurant space to cater to more diners at a time!

Crispy Bone, $6

At Uya 四代目菊川 , there is minimal wastage as every part of the unagi goes into good use. The crispy unagi bone was crunchy and addictive, with close to no fishy taste. Its taste reminded me of chicharon (Filipino fried pig skin), but without the fats. Perfect for snacking on!

Grilled Liver, $9

Served either with sauce or poached, each liver was soft and fresh. As we were having it for the first time, we figured that having it with the sauce would be a “safer” option. Turns out that that was a good call, as the sauce helped add a slight sweetness to the taste of the liver. However, given the chance, I would like to give the poached liver a try to experience its taste in its originality.

Hitsumabushi, $35(M) $48(L)

Now we get to the meat of the matter (pun intended). At the first bite, I loved how the skin of unagi was just crispy enough, while the flesh was soft. The sauce that glazed the unagi was not too overpowering, and it helped bring out the unagi taste just right.

Actually, not too many people know this, but the reason why the unagi served at Uya 四代目菊川  is so plump and fresh is because they are stored in Tatebas (bucket filtration system), and were only incapacitated before every lunch and dinner service. Only the freshest for you at Uya 四代目菊川 !

On the other hand, something that most people are aware of are the 3 main ways of eating Hitsumabushi. The original way (without any garnishing), adding condiments (spring onion, wasabi, and nori), and making Ochazuke (rice with soup) with condiments and Dashi broth.

Personally, I preferred the second method of adding condiments to my Hitsumabushi here at Uya 四代目菊川.

The wasabi helped enhance the flavour, giving the unagi an extra kick. Additionally, it wasn’t too spicy, so you don’t have to worry about overdoing the spice. Then, the spring onions come in. They helped add balance to the dish by giving it a fresh, refreshing taste.

All this is not to say that the original taste of Hitsumabushi was not nice, but rather the condiments helped add a complexity to the taste of the dish.

Verdict

Unagi isn’t the easiest dish to prepare, and the amount of meticulous effort that goes into preparing it cannot be put into mere words. The chefs at Uya 四代目菊川 have honed the skill of crafting the perfect bowl of Hitsumabushi, and I highly recommend that you give them a try.

Special Promotion

In conjunction with the traditional Day of the Ox, Uya 四代目菊川  is having a special promotion. On the 20th July 2018 AND 1st of August 2018, with any purchase of any unagi set, diners will get to spin a die. The number that the die lands on entitles diners a discount off their bill. For instance, if the die were to land on a “2”, you will get to have a 20% discount off your bill and so on. Imagine if the die lands on a “6”!

What’s even better is that Uya 四代目菊川 is extending their opening hours by 30 minutes on those two days, so you have no more excuse not to head on down!

Sumo-Ya – Does Banana and Chocolate Curry Rice Sound Bizarre To You?

Office workers in the CBD are seriously spoiled for choice when it comes to picking something for lunch. Joining the many options comes Sumo-Ya, a new Japanese eatery specializing in Japanese Curry Rice and Collagen Rich Ramen.

The Food

Helming the kitchen is Chef Zhan Qiang, a man with many years of experience handling Japanese dishes and ingredients. While there aren’t a huge variety of dishes, what makes up for it is the quality of food that’s served before you.

To top it all off, there’s no GST or service charge!

Sumo-Ya Yakiniku Ramen

Sumo Yakiniku Ramen (Spicy), $18.90

Chef Zhan Qiang fancies a chicken based broth to make his Tori Paitan Ramen. Paitan means it’s a thick, creamy and rich broth (usually chocked full of collagen that makes the skin smooth and firm).

This is an extremely filling dish. You get 280g of tender pork shabu shabu, that nice runny egg on top of a very generous amount of perfectly cooked ramen. BUT, it could have been slightly spicier.

Sumo-Ya Cha Shu Ramen

Chashu Ramen, $13.90

This was slightly disappointing. The broth was tasty and rich but the Cha Shu pieces were not as tender as I would have liked it to be and the egg was slightly overcooked. However, the portion for $13.90 was really generous! You’ll definitely feel full with this for sure!

Cha Shu Curry Rice, $10.90

Ever heard of Banana, Apple and Dark Chocolate infused curry? Yeah me neither. Apparently, in order to create the Black Japanese Curry that you find in Japan, you have to use chocolate and fruits! This is what gives it it’s sweetness and color.

I’ve been to Japan before and I cannot deny the similarities of Sumo-Ya’s curry rice to Japans. And for $10.90, you get A LOT of rice! The Cha Shu cubes would have been better fried to give the dish an added texture.

If you’re still hungry, they also have a humble selection of ingredients for Oden. I loved the taste of the broth, there’s something really addictive about it.

 

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Is it the best ramen that I’ve tasted in Singapore? Probably not BUT definitely one of the most value for money. The similarities of Sumo-Ya’s curry rice to that of authentic Japanese Curry Rice is uncanny as well. If you’re working around the area, Sumo-Ya is perfect for you worker ants!

Little Creatures Opens Up A Branch In Singapore And People Are Going Crazy Over It

Based in Fremantle, Western Australia, Little Creatures has opened a brewpub right here in Singapore! Having done my degree in Perth, I was pretty stoked when I heard the news.

If you want a table, you’ll have to book early because this place is gaining popularity day after day and you can expect it to be crowded.

The Food

Similar to its Perth branch, Little Creatures Singapore brews and serves their beers on site. You can even ask for a quick guided tour if you like (if they’re not too busy). They have nine beers on tap featuring crowd favorites like Pale Ale, Bright Ale, Pilsner, IPA and Rogers.

For the food, the prices might be a little steep but there’s no denying that their dishes taste pretty darn good (as you’ll understand after reading on).

Wild Mushroom, Onion, White Wine, Parmesan Cheese

Might not look like much but this dish definitely packs a punch with regards to flavor. The risotto was perfectly cooked, not too soggy nor too hard and each individual grain was chocked full of a rich mushroom taste.

Caramelized Onions, Bacon, Tomato, Cheddar, Fries and Smoked Paprika Mayonnaise

Don’t overthink this. It is as advertised. There’s nothing special about this other than the Paprika Mayonnaise which leaves a nice lingering spicy aftertaste. The beef was just a tad over cooked though but the tomatoes and bacon fat made up for that dryness.

Tartare Sauce and Lemon

When it arrived, it smelled extremely fishy but be prepared for a big surprise when you take a bite as there was practically no lingering fish taste. The batter they use for the fish is also very light and crispy. My only gripe about this dish is that the tartare sauce might be a little too sweet.

Sundried Tomato, Mozzarella, Basil

If they had Pepperoni, I would have ordered Pepperoni but alas, it’s not on the menu. No regrets though as this was my FAVORITE dish of the night. Maybe it’s just me but I felt that the sundried tomatoes had a bite of spiciness to them. The best thing? That light and tasty pizza crust. I could eat two of these babies with no problem.

Pork Crackling, Red Cabbage Sauerkraut

Super tender pieces of meat combined with melt-in-your-mouth fats and crispy skin. Wow. Sounds like a great combination but wait, there’s more! There are a couple of strategically placed pork crackling pieces here and there which makes this dish really irresistible. Perfect with any of their beers too!

I’m a little divided on this one. On one hand, the food and beer is good but it is a little pricey. It’s not economical to be coming back every other day but good for special occasions for sure. If you’re there “just for the alcohol”, that works too!

Brew & Bar – Coffee And Beer With More Than A Little Peranakan Twist

If you live in the east and love Peranakan food, forget about Simpang Bedok and pop over to Brew & Bar. They serve pretty authentic Peranakan cuisine that’s made from scratch (means no msg and other unhealthy gunk) on top of decent coffee and an interesting range of craft beer.

If you’re an ignoramus when it comes to food, Peranakan cuisine takes lots of preparation and patience before it reaches your table. So to all the babas and nyonyas out there, a big thank you is in order for all the awesome food! The food at Brew & Bar is no exception of course!

Brew & Bar Beef Rendang

Beef Rendang, $14

Don’t worry people, it ain’t crispy. Beef Rendang is a must when eating Peranakan cuisine. Over at Brew & Bar, the beef was so tender that my spoon cut through the meat effortlessly! Taste wise, it has just the right amount of spiciness and sweetness. Topped with shredded coconut you really get a good mix of sweet, spicy and sour. Yums!

The sotong was perfectly cooked and fresh giving a nice tender yet chewy texture to every bite. Swimming in an extremely tasty (slightly salty and spicy) squid ink sauce, this dish is perfect with their BLUE rice!

Brew & Bar Hee Pio Soup

Hee Pio Soup, $12

Ahh, Fish Maw Soup with meatballs. One of my personal favorites. Did Brew & Bar mess it up? No they did not! The handmade meatballs were extremely tender and super satisfying. Oh and that all naturally sweet soup was so addictive, I wish I had a bowl everyday. The final element of the dish that deserves my praise would be the QUAILS EGGS. Somehow the yolk of the quail’s egg was soft and gooey.

Brew & Bar Ayam Buah Keluak

Ayam Buah Keluak, $12

This is one dish that has a really long preparation time (Minimum 5 days in fact). If the nuts aren’t cleaned properly (oh grow up), you might get an upset stomach. Brew & Bar stuffs minced meat in the shells/nuts to make it chewy and more fulfilling. I love Buah Keluak! Could eat 20 of these no problem. The chicken meat was a tad tough though.

Don’t forget to try their interesting Apple Crumble Cider, $13 from New Zeland. It’s like dessert but in a drink with alcohol. Oh and their extremely sweet Roselle Apple Floral Tea, $7 that they make in house.

 

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Blue flower petal infused rice? Great Tasting food? Unique beers from around the world? Peranakan food? It checks all my boxes for sure. In the famous words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, “I’ll be back”.

Thai Goldmine Kitchen has the potential to join the ranks of famous and well-established Thai eateries in Singapore (perhaps even overtaking them). The secret lies in the food.

There’s really a wide variety of dishes to choose from at Thai Goldmine Kitchen. If you go at lunchtime, there are some dishes that are served in smaller portions (and cheaper of course) for that quick office lunch.

Thai Goldmine Kitchen Mee Pok

Sukhothai Mee Pok, $7

This is a dish you won’t find this readily available in Singapore. It’s origins come from Thai roadside stores but it’s been tweaked to cater to the local Singaporean palate (hence the mee pok).

It’s a very sweet dish so if you don’t have a sweet tooth, let them know you don’t want the sweet chilli when you order.

Thai Goldmine Kitchen Prawn Cakes

Prawn Cakes, $10 for 4 pieces

At $2.50 per piece, you get a generous amount of fried mince prawns that are made upon order. That crispy exterior and fresh, soft interior makes this dish a MUST TRY!

Charcoal Pot Cear Tom Yum Seafood Soup, $18

What’s a thai place without Tom Yum soup am I right? The amount of fresh ingredients they chuck into one pot of soup is more than welcomed. The best part? The soup is refillable (not for the lunch sized option). That iconic sourness of tom yum is great to cleanse your palate and I found myself constantly sipping this soup!

Another popular item is the Green Curry Chicken. Tender chicken, slightly spicy green curry and a strong coconut milk aftertaste. Goes very well with a bowl of rice and definitely fills you up!

This dish is Thai Goldmine Kitchen’s Chef’s Signature dish and if it’s your first visit, you HAVE to order this. The tender pork that has absorbed the light vinegar sauce is amazing. I must point out that this is an EXTREMELY unhealthy dish but damn shiok la.

Expect slightly sweet notes and humongous prawns with this one. The eggs give this dish a nice creamy and rich texture too!

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Go in groups of 3 or 4 so you can have a wide variety of dishes at a fraction of the price. The portions are really generous at Thai Goldmine Kitchen so it’s a YES from me. However, if you’re going solo, the lunch menu will fit right up your alley.

Let’s Get A Hokey Bowl @ Hokey Poki, The New Joint At FOMO Singapore

What’s in a Hokey bowl? Let’s just say it’s totally up to you because you get to pick and choose. While the concept might sound familiar to some Japanese/Hawaiian fusion f&b outlets (that have huge spiders found in their bowls). Hokey Poki is totally different with their product offerings catered to the local Singaporean palate (and definitely no spiders).

The Food

There are 11 different mains to select. Of course you have your standard Salmon Poke Bowl BUT be spoiled for choice with selections like Laksa Mentai Soft Shell Crab, Sambal Shishamo and Wasabi Mayo Chicken!

If you thought that was all, you can even choose your own base (Salad, Purple Rice (Hot/Cold), Quinoa and Cold Cha Soba) !

Seasoned Salmon Cubes with Mango, Jellyfish and Onsen Egg

There’s a lot of different flavour profiles in this dish but somehow everything blends together perfectly. The soba was nice and firm (not to mention tasty), the salmon was fresh, the onsen egg accentuated the nice creamy texture of the salmon and for $10.90 you get a really generous amount of salmon and jellyfish!

Purple rice is something new to me. Apparently, it possesses antioxidants (a trait that brown rice does not have) and I honestly think it tastes way better than brown rice. The amazing thing about the Sushi Taco at Hokey Poki is that the tasty Seaweed Taco Shell doesn’t break when you bite into it because it’s being held together by a light tempura batter!

BAOBAO – Where Traditional Baos Get A Huge (Healthy) Makeover And We Likey

What the good people at BAOBAO have done is to take something so simple and obscure – the common bao (steamed bun) and give it an extreme makeover to cater to the ever evolving palates of the Singaporean people.

While people may be adverse to change, this is definitely a change I can live with (for a leaner and thinner me). Goodbye Char Siew, farewell Kong Bak, you won’t be missed.

The Food

Currently offering 6 different flavoured Baos, each Bao comes with a generous portion of meat, veggies and awesome homemade sauce! You are also promised the freshest Bao experience as they get their ingredients delivered to them every morning!

Head’s up though, it’s gonna get a little messy.

Pulled Pork Bao, $3.90

The thing about pulled pork in most places is that it tends to be over-the-top salty. But at BAOBAO, it’s just right! Not to mention how juicy and tender the meat is.

Spicy Beef Bao, $3.90

I like spice and I love beef so I might be a little biased for this one. So it will come as no surprise when I say that this was my favourite! The juiciness and tenderness of the Australian Beef Brisket was consistent in comparison to the pulled pork and the cucumbers provided a nice textured bite (also helps to cool off the spice).

Fish Tempura Bao, $3.90

The tempura batter on that slice of dory fish gave this bao a nice crunch. Dory fish doesn’t have that strong fishy aftertaste and that delectable coriander and parsley sauce is just yums (trust me it’s quite addictive). With the fluffy Bao dough however, everything felt too soft. I think it would go better with the rice bowls.

Chicken Masala Rice Bowl, $7.90

For their rice bowls, you get more than double the portion of meat in the Baos, more veggies and a combination of brown, black and white rice. Sounds really healthy yeah?

The Masala taste was apparent from the first bite and the chicken was really tender. I would have loved it even more if there was a little spicy kick (refer to how I like spice under the beef bao section above).

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

There were 2 more BAOBAO flavours that I had yet to try, Garlic Chicken and Portobello Mushroom. I would go back to try those and of course I would order the Spicy Beef Bao again! Priced at $3.90 per bao, it’s pretty value for money for the portions AND you’ll feel bloody bao (full) too. Trust.
