Yi Xin Seafood Steam Potting
HONG KONG’S POPULAR FOOD TREND is slowly creeping its way onto Singaporean shores and we LOVE IT!!!!
Steam Potting ensures you keep your carbohydrate intake to a bare minimum as they serve you your staples (porridge) at the end of the meal. By then, you’re honestly too full to eat anymore and end up requesting for takeaway.
Yi Xin Seafood Steam Potting is a new joint in Serangoon Gardens that’s pretty obscure. It’s tucked in a corner along the Pow Sing Chicken Rice stretch of shop houses and can easily be missed if you don’t know what you’re looking for.
I took mom for a dinner date and boy was she happy with the food.
Save yourself the trouble and order the set. In terms of value, the sets are so worth it as opposed to ordering ala carte. Set B gets you A WHOLE LOBSTER, CRABS, LIVE PRAWNS, ABALONE, basically heaps of premium ingredients for a reasonable price of $90 per pax.
You could opt for Set A as well, it’s considerably cheaper but you miss out on the LOBSTER. Your choice.
How it works, the extremely attentive and friendly staff will bring out your ingredients and you don’t even have to lift a finger to cook, they do everything for you. Sit back, relax, snap #foodporn pictures and eat with not a care in the world
Set B Breakdown
It’s a pretty long list of food items but let’s talk about the ones that made this set a super valued one.
Live Tiger Prawns
They scoop up a bunch of these crustaceans from a tank and skewer them so they don’t curl up when cooked.
Note that there’s not one bit of seasoning but them prawns are naturally sweet and extremely fresh. What’s more, for just 2 people, they gave us a substantial amount of prawns!
The LOBSTER they gave us WAS HUGE! Can you believe this was mom’s first lobster experience? She thoroughly enjoyed herself with this one.
Similar to the prawns, the flesh came off easily with the lightest of pulls and was fragrant, sweet and tender. I think I might get Hepatitis B soon.
This was the winner of the night (yes, it beats the lobster). They pre-slice the fish so that the meat cooks evenly and in a quicker time but WOW! I’ve had many a seabass at wedding dinners, this one right here, steals the cake.
No fishy after taste,
Everything you look for in a fish dish, you’ll find here.
Mom and I had to get this packed in take-away boxes as we were just too full for a bowl. In the spirit of research, I did take two scoops just for a taste.
Throughout the course of the meal, the porridge is being cooked along with your other dishes in a bottom compartment. So all the seafood-y goodness that condenses from your ingredients trickles down to the porridge. Imagine that.
It’s a shame that by the time you reach the porridge, you’re too stuffed. It’s really one hell of a porridge.
I’m glad I chanced upon Yi Xin Seafood Steam Potting. Their food is undeniably good and the fact that most, if not all of their ingredients are live, means you get the freshest experience.
Since they’re new, there weren’t many customers but I foresee it gaining popularity over time. The price might be a little steep but believe me, it’s so worth it.
One crucial thing that I need to highlight is the amount of time Steam Potting consumes. Our dinner lasted us a little over 2 hours. So eat there if you have a family gathering, you’ll have lots of time to bond.
