Hot Dog Heaven

Anyone will tell you that in Singapore, there’s absolutely no such thing as there not being food around. With so many eateries and restaurants peppered all over the island, it’s a miracle more people aren’t perpetually spoiled for choice when it comes to their meals.

I found myself in a similar position yesterday, when I was in town around dinner, and I was starving. I was around PoMo Shopping Center, and having not eaten the whole day, boy was I ready for a good meal. The only problem was, there was so much to choose from, I simply couldn’t decide what to eat.

Since it was the 4th of July, we decided to get the most Western thing in eyeshot, which just so  happened to be Hotdogs Inc.

Hotdogs Inc.

At first glance, Hotdogs Inc.’s outlet at PoMo Shopping Center seemed like any other unassuming food outlet, with a no-frills, almost barebones layout consisting of a counter to order at, a condiment station, and ample seating. Little did I know, I was in for one of the best hotdog experiences of my life.

The Service

As soon as we stepped up to the counter to order, we were greeted with warm smiles and pleasantness. The person taking our order, whom we later discovered was the manager of the outlet, was very helpful in explaining the different dogs they had, as well as telling us about the current promotions they were having. This may not seem like much, but anyone who’s worked F&B before can tell you that having to repeat the same information to everyone who walks up to the counter, and still doing it with a genuine smile, is not an easy feat.

The Food

Spicy Italian Sausage Dog

My colleague decided to go for the Spicy Italian Sausage dog, which was the special of the day. Simply loaded with flavour, the Spicy Italian Sausage dog is made with fresh Wild Rocket Leaves, Purple Cabbage and Round Cabbage, topped with Hotdog Relish, Tomato & Cheese Sauce.

As delicious as this dog looks, though, something else caught my eye.

Wienerli Dog

When I go out to eat, I usually have a couple of habits.

  1. No vegetables.

I personally find that the taste of the vegetables can sometimes overpower and distract from the flavour of the meat, rather than complement it.

2.   Meat.

Yup, meat. Lots and lots of meat.

3.   Sauce.

Because who doesn’t love sauce?

Even though the picture does show that there is a little greenery in the dish, it was the last thing on my mind as soon as I read what was in this beast.

“Spoilt for choice between Beef & Pork Sausages? Our Wienerli Sausage contains both top-grade Beef & Pork so You can have the best of both worlds by choosing our Wienerli sausage!

Our WIENERLI SAUSAGE hotdog bun comes with fresh Wild Rockets, Purple Cabbage, Round Cabbage, Onions, Tomato and topped with Sweet Relish & our home-made Chilli Crab Mayo.”

Come on. With a description like that, you’d be insane to turn down this bad boy.

The MOST flavorful dog I’ve had in ages, HANDS DOWN!

  • A perfectly cooked sausage
  • The relish added a layer of unexpected complexity
  • Chili Crab Mayo empowered every bite with an umami overload.

If they have food in heaven, this would be on their menu.

Mention 4th of july and 2 things come to mind. Fireworks and BBQ. While we may not have fireworks here in Singapore to celebrate America’s independence day, the free Wagyu burgers at Adrift by David Myers will make up for it.

Put on Half a Pound, Dad

Pei Xia Ang

Father’s Day is this weekend, and we all want to treat our supporting and loving dad right. If you are still fretting over the right choice of gift, then you need to READ ON!

Only recently established, Half Pound burger and Bar Grill has already been a hot favourite among locals.

father's day at half pound

a great place to celebrate father’s day– half pound burger bar and grill

Nestled along Purvis Street, this place focuses on burgers (hence the name), and if Dad is a fan of beef patties, steaks and whatnot, all the more you need to take him there!!

We managed to pop by this week, and here is the review of what we have sampled:

father's day soup

mushroom soup as starter

Mushroom Soup

I usually do not choose mushroom soup from the menu due to its commonness, but this bowl of soup was quite well executed.

Topped with croutons and garnished with spring onions, this soup was lovingly made by the chef. It did not taste like the regular ones poured from a can. As an added bonus, the soup comes with generous chunks of mushrooms to add to its creamy texture.

father's day burger meal

the half pound burger was very flavourful

Petite Half Pound Burger

Don’t be fooled by its name though, this burger may be called “petite”, but the flavours sure pack a PUNCH.

The tender and succulent beef patty carried a smoky aftertaste, complementing the bacon and cheddar for that meaty, greasy taste that all meat-lovers lust for.

fathers day steak

steak frites, good value for money

Steak Frites

For its price, the steak that I had was worth your buck. The meat was tender, and the layer of fat was juicy and TOTALLY ON POINT.

fathers day beer

enjoy a pint of beer to go with your meal

A hearty burger dish is only complete with craft beer by its side. For an extra touch this Fathers’ Day, treat dad to imported beer from Germany and the States.

From its menu, Half Pound offers Maisel’s Weisse ($9 for half pint, $12 for full pint), and 8 Ball Stout ($12 for full pint).

The former was refreshing and light, while the stout was smooth and easy to drink.
